How To Remove iWeb Site Name From Public URL

How to remove the iWeb Site name from the url displayed in the browser bar is probably one of the most common questions we get asked by our iWeb users. It has no detrimental effect on your web site, other than making it longer and sometimes a little untidy. If you have given your iWeb Site a relevant name when creating your website, then you may not mind, or may even be happy to see it displayed. If however you have given your site a name like My_First_Site it may not look so cool.

Removing the iWeb site name from the url requires a little bit of digging in the web directory to add some necessary code that makes the web browsers jump across the site name and only display the pages with your iWeb site. We originally wrote a long tutorial to help our iWeb users to achieve this, but it got a bit complicated. We therefore decided to record this screencast that takes you through the necessary steps and shows you exactly what to do and where to do it.

Part of the process of removing the iWeb site name from the url is to add a special file called a .htaccess file. You can make these easily using a plain text editor like Text Edit on your mac. The screencast shows you how to do all this, so no need to worry. If you already have a .htaccess file in your web directory, you will just need to add the relevant code into the existing file – See below

If you just want the htaccess code I have used to add it into your existing htaccess file, or you want to create your own htaccess File, copy the code below. Remember, If you are creating your own htaccess file dont’t name it .htaccess until you have it uploaded to the server, or it will hide from you!

RewriteEngine on
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} yourdomain\.com [NC]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} yourdomain\.co\.uk [NC]
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} !/your-iweb-sitename
RewriteRule (.*) /your-iweb-sitename/$1 [L]
